For Wednesday's Class

Here are your answers for Questions 1-7

1) The musical soundtrack that we listen to yesterday was Philip Glass's Koyaanisqatsi.  What does Koyaanisqatsi mean?  Why do you think it was chosen for this particular soundtrack?  How does this term of Koyaanisqatsi fit int our overall review of a place/album?
Koyaanisqatsi means a state of life that calls for another way of living. We think it was chosen for this particular soundtrack because Koyannisqatsi means life out of balance and in the soundtrack she was trying to get us to go on an adventure and our life will be off balance if we only pay attention to where we going instead of what we listening to at that moment. Koyannisqatsi fits in our overall review of a place/album because it helps us pay more attention and be balanced to the place and the album at the same time, by either having one ear plug in, taking videos, taking pictures, tape recorder, and taking mental notes.

2) What is Dérive? How did the recording help us understand this concept?  What free apps are available to download to help us do our own Dérive?  Why is doing a Dérive helpful for writing reviews for a place/album?
The definition of dérive is an unplanned journey through a landscape, usually urban, on which the subtle aesthetic contours of the surrounding architecture and geography subconsciously direct the travelers, with the ultimate goal of encountering an entirely new and authentic experience. As we listened to the recording, the woman told us to walk in different directions and pointed out things we might have never noticed before; the goal for this was to help us to see the world like it really is. There is a free app called “Dérive App” and it basically gives you a list of things to do and places to go. Dérive is very important for writing a review of a place or album because it gets you to notice things that you wouldn’t normally notice, it broadens your mind.

3) How to does Psychogeography fit into the writing of movie reviews and place reviews.
Since the definition of psychogeography is simply an approach of geography that emphasizes playfulness around environments, this could have large effects on reviews for places and movies. This could come in handy since our next paper is about how music affects the environment. Going to somewhere such a park in the city verses a nature trail would possibly bring out the kid in someone and change the aspect of the experience. How this would affect people wring reviews would simply change their outlook on the situation at hand. When our class writes papers with the music, it could change the mood of the person or make them feel a certain way. While with psychogeography has to do with the area, our papers can relate because the music changes how we feel rather than the area itself. It also changes the way we look at the area. Whatever the area that you choose to do, being playful at that area can help too. Dancing to the music, playing air guitar, playing games, sword fight with a friend, or anything else for the matter are all fun things to do while listening to music.

4) What is Supermodernism as it relates to architecture?  How is our campus Supermodern?  How does the concept of Supermodernism relate to our understanding of analyzing a constructed place?
Supermodernism is the result of functional modern style. Francis Marion has a functional style. Because it is a place of learning they have to be functional to accommodate each and every student. There are however some buildings on campus that are older and not as equipped but they work just as well. Modern style means clean lines and shapes. For example, LSF and MSB they are connected but they are nothing alike. LSF is a building with modern style that is equipped. MSB is old and is connected to this new modern building making it look depressing pretty much. So basically Supermodernism is where you do not incorporate the old with the new.

5) What is Synchronicity? Give me the best example of Synchronicity from your journey yesterday?  How can we create an experience of Synchronicity in our album/place review?
Synchronicity is the experience of two or more events that are apparently causally unrelated or unlikely to occur together by chance, yet are experienced as occurring together in a meaningful manner.  For example, when Raka was walking in the rain yesterday she came upon a cottage on campus and come to find out the cooked food in there. Anthony was walking listening to the recording and it told him to cross at the next intersection and he just took a right. Constant, said she had turn the music off just as the lady said and when she turned it back on she would be there and once she did so the rain started pouring down and the voice of the lady sounded creepy which caused her to be sad. Eric said he was going to listen to his album in the gym during a basketball game. Kedisha is going to listen to NWA at the pond which is different because the album is very hood and violent opposed to the pond being very clam and soothing which is an example of synchronicity because this atmospheres are total opposite.

6) What is Serendipity?  Give me the best example of Serendipity from your journey yesterday?  How can Serendipity be used with scientific method to create an interesting experience with your album/place review?

Serendipity- happy accident or pleasant surprise. Example: While listening to the audio we were told to go to a dark place. We decided to go to the grave yard that is on campus. While at the grave yard there was a squirrel that popped out of nowhere and scared us all. The task was to pick an album that we have never heard and go to a place we have never been. You may have a preconceived feeling towards the album and the place. After you go to the place and listen to the album your feelings may change thus proving that the scientific method and serendipity go hand in hand. The steps of the scientific method are to form a hypothesis, test it and retest it. This may prove or denied your hypothesis, which could be a happy accident that can lead to a new discovery.

7) Yesterday's audio tour is from this website: http://www.fancystitchmachine.org/conflux.htm .  Why is this a tour of "anywhere"?  What is the point of taking a tour of a place with different/conflicting directions?  It mentions that this is a way of "pattern recognition."  Why is this helpful for writing this assignment?
The audio is considered a “tour of anywhere” because you don’t know exactly where you’re going and where you may end up. The directions in the audio didn’t completely coincide with our actual surroundings. It was up to each individual listener to relate actual places and pinpoints to the places and pinpoints being described in the audio. The point of taking this tour with different/conflicting directions was to see how the directions on the audio related to the actual place you were. Some directions on the audio may have said “go left” when there was no left.  However, you were able to easily visualize the setting of the narrator. This activity taught us how to describe our surroundings and settings when writing our own travelogue.

QUIZ FOR TOMORROW: Our writing is a mixture of both a place review and a music review.  What would be the best way of reviewing both?  How much information should we give weight to both reviews?  How can we mix the place and music review up so it reads naturally?

Also, be prepared to answer questions relating to the paragraphs above.  I will allow you to use printed copies of this post in your quiz tomorrow.
